Re: USMLE + FUN 8(Surgery)
mohhaider - 10-06-08 16:57 I think that since that there is a risk of perforation and peritonitis ,Sigmoidoscopic examination can not be used here as it increases the risk of perforation .

niusha - 10-07-08 08:04 both colonoscopy and barium enema are contra indicated.. but we can use CTSCAn if needed.

Re: USMLE + FUN 8(Surgery)
sackatdoc - 10-07-08 08:30 yeah and once the acute phase settles, colonoscopy is done to rule out any underlying pathology.say after 6weeks.

Re: USMLE + FUN 8(Surgery)
mohhaider - 10-07-08 14:36 Yes ,any test that increase the risk of perforation is contraindicated same as Meckeles diverticulum in which perforation could happen with these tests.

Re: USMLE + FUN 8(Surgery)
Youngdoctor - 10-10-08 01:27 i doubt that we can do coloscopy or sigmoidoscopy. Because it could preforate, even in any stage that could lead to perforation.

Re: USMLE + FUN 8(Surgery)
sackatdoc - 10-18-08 03:34 i can help clearing your doubt by giving reference of the kaplan surgery notes, which mention that repeated episodes of diverticulitis should be examined for strictures by performing colonoscopy and no it will not cause perforation when the acute process has settled,i hope that helps.

Re: USMLE + FUN 8(Surgery)
niusha - 10-18-08 11:28 Sdoc said after 6 weeks when the symptoms are settled and with out any diagnosis in repeating diverticulitis It seems logical and true although I am in the middle of Kaplan and I've not read the management of diverticulitis yet...
