mohhaider - 10-17-08 08:51 Welcome back niusha ,
I think that inguinal hernias are classified ae either direct and indirect hernias, with the indirect one pass through the deep inguinal ring and more susceptable to strangulation .

Re: USMLE + FUN 13(Surgery)
sackatdoc - 10-17-08 14:34 inguinal hernias are only 2 types-direct or indirect
direct are the ones that pass thru the weak muscular posterior wall of the canal, can be of 2 types medial and lateral.
indirect are the ones that pass thru the external inguinal opening all the way thru the canal, seen more in younger individual

Re: USMLE + FUN 13(Surgery)
sackatdoc - 10-18-08 01:55 yes i 'd like to add femoral as third type, when i saw inguinal , i just remembered direct and indirect, femoral is the third type and it is the one which herniates most often, more common in females

Re: USMLE + FUN 13(Surgery)
mohhaider - 10-18-08 02:26 I don't think that femoral hernia is a type of inguinal hernia although it's close to inguinal area .The inguinal hernias is classified as either direct and indirect one .

niusha - 10-18-08 11:52 Yeah Haider is right....the best question is what are three types of GROIN hernias ? and all your answers were true..in that cae FEMORAL hernias are more suseptible to strangulation....

sackatdoc - 10-18-08 12:09 THANKS TO YOU AS WELL.....but describe the differences between them, Niusha,i'd like to advise you to be more exhaustive with the answers you give, that is should explain them more, with that we will get more clear understanding

Re: USMLE + FUN 13(Surgery)
niusha - 10-20-08 09:59 Yup:
Indirect hernias or most common cause in both sexes and all ages. hernia sac travels inner and outer inguinal rings into the scerotom or labia because of the patent processus vaginalis(congenital defect)
Direct ones ( no sac) protrude medial to inferior epigasric level because of weakness in abdominal musculature of Hesselbach traingle.
Femoral ones are more in Females there is no sac and the hernia come to anterior part of thigh..
Is that enough ?

Re: USMLE + FUN 13(Surgery)
sackatdoc - 10-21-08 03:55 yeah more than enough for USMLE, but for practicals i think NO, we will have to be more informed,i'd not studied inguinal hernia atall for usmle coz it is a very practical kind of topic, so i think it is ok
