Hello!!

Can someone comment on options for getting visa transferred from visitor visa to j1 or H1b visa before residency. If research is one option, what kind of research clinical research or basic research and how to go about it? how difficult is it? Will research assistant jobs posted on websites of universities sponsor visa for foreign medical graduates?

Thanks.

The "J" visa is for educational and cultural exchange programs designated by the Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs.

The "J" exchange visitor program is designed to promote the interchange of persons, knowledge and skills in the fields of education, arts and sciences. Participants include students at all academic levels trainees obtaining on-the-job training with firms, institutions and agencies. Teachers of primary, secondary and specialized schools, professors coming to teach or do research at institutions of higher learning; research scholars; professional trainees in the medical and allied fields and international visitors coming for the purpose of travelling, observing, consulting, conducting research, training, sharing or demonstrating specialized knowledge or skills or participating in organized people-to-people programs.

Ye, research programs can sponsor J1 Vsas and even H1b visas. It is usually the post-doctoral fellow positions for which these visas r sponsored.
I also know some people who have got such visas for clinical research jobs as well.
If one has the required qualifications for a research assistant job then the employer can sponsor a visa even for that.
Good Luck and Regards!
