Dear fellas..
I really need an advice.
I was graduated from Iraq with a degree of MBChB in 1998, I did my rotations for 2 years, worked as a primary care physician in rural area then I joined residency in orthopedics in Iraq in 2006 until I left to the US in 2008.
USMLE scores are:
step 1 99/254 ...1st attemp
step 2 ck 99/265 ...1st attempt
CS pass from ist attempt
I couldn't apply because my school delayed my papers and my name has been changed and till now I don't have ECFMG certificate because my cuntry in chaos and still a lot of delays in sending my papers and diploma.
What should I do now while I'm waiting.
I know my year of a graduation is a BIG problem but I was hoping that high scores will give me redemption.
I'm looking for observerships or externships but no luck till now, I'm broke and can't afford to pay big $$$ for that.
Should i take step 3...or it's just a waste of time and money. If not, what else to do?
What are the chances in next year match, any speciality, any program and anywhere?
Need ur help and guidance please

Ye, u can take Step-3 but u need to score high on this step as well.Donot score low on Step-3 as it will keep the programs away from calling u for an interview. If u score high it will definitely help.
Yur scores on Step-1 and Step-2CK r great and will really be helpful, and the best thing is u passed all exams on first attempt.
Apply for free observeships in US hospitals.Keep yurself clinically active. Here is a link where u can fing free observerships :
http://www.usmletomd.com/usce/2006/12/alabama-al.html
The only serious flaw in yur application is yur year of graduation, but there is nothing u can do to change it.The only thing u can do is that u can add to yur other credentials.
U can apply to IM,General Surgery prelim & categorical,Psychiatry,FM,Pediatrics. In comparison to other specialties FM and Psych r considered less competitive. Apply broadly and after verifying the program criteria for year of graduation.Write a nice personal statement as well and get it checked.
Lastly, no one can guess anyone's chances in securing a residency spot.
Good Luck!

Dear adonis
I'm very thankful for ur input, and I'm very sorry for ur grandmother, I hope she rest in peace.

I'm checking programs at FREIDA to look for ones without year of graduation spicifications, is there any other way to check that, I mean is there a list that give us such programs without the need to check every single program's website and look in the fine print?

What about match a resident website, they promise you help in matching, are they legit, are they helpful?

Thanks again and best of luck to you.

The best way wud be to call the programs or to check their websites for their residency criteria. But, all that wud be a very laborius task.
Ye, there r many websites which claim to provide the most uptodate information about residency criteria and Matcharesident is one of them.I have read some good reviews about it on the web,but u also need to check yurself.
Good Luck!
