I have applied for the prgrams in sept, and this year looks super gloom for me...im planning to take step 3 while im here and get it out of the way... whats a good time to give it, and whats an average study prep time.

Step-3 tests the practice of unsupervised medicine. So ,take it when u feel fully prepared and only after consulting the reliable resources.
As InSitu said 3 months is the average period of preparation.
Pay a lot of attention to the CCS as it constitutes 25% on the actual exam.
I suggest USMLE world interactive CCS .
Good luck.
