When To Apply For Visa?

i am a post Md(gen med ) from india .i am in a decent job.Now i am planning to give usmle 1,2 and cs for internal medicine residency .I am planing to quit my job to study.my doubt is ,should i apply for a visitor visa before i quit my job.My sis stays in USA.Should i take a invitation from my sister or go by myself

U need visa only in order to take Step-2CS test in the US and when u have to go there for interviews.After u apply for Step-2CS exam u will get a sponsorship letter from the ECFMG thro' e.mail.U can apply for a visitor visa on the basis of that letter.
U do not need visa sponsorship document from yur sister for this purpose.
