When to take USMLE step 1
markovnikovas - 10-01-09 08:43
Hi, I'm currently in my 3d year of Med-school. (out of 6). When would the right time to take the USMLE step 1?
My guess is after I've finished this my 3d year (last year of "classroom-orientated" sciences).

It just depends on an individual. Some would recommend taking it after yur medical school and some would say that the right time for taking it is after u finish the basic sciences curriculum of yur medical school.
According to me one needs to prepare for at least 4-6months full time for Step-1 exam rather than taking it in a hurry and ending with a low or a mediocre score.Remember, one cannot take the exam step again to improve his/her score.
But, if u think that u can fully master the exam study material and Q Banks fully while u r still in yur medical school then this approach can also be right in yur case.
Good Luck!

markovnikovas - 10-01-09 09:40 Well the memory stays "fresh" if I take it after finishing the basic sciences, I'd probably have to learn stuff over again, because I'd forget things over the years ( e.g. Biochemistry). On the other hand the questions in step 1 are very clinically orientated, so I'd have to learn a lot of extra material...
Another question: are these materials alone enough to pass USMLE with high scores?

Use the following materials:
1)Kaplan Lecture Notes
2)Kaplan Q Book
3)Goljan Audio for Step-1
4)First Aid for Step-1
5)Kaplan/USMLE World Q Banks
6)NBME / USMLEWorld SelfAssesment tests
(Before Actual Exams)
Prepare at least 4-6 months full time for USMLE Step-1 exam.
Try to score > 70% on an average on the Q Banks.
These notes will be available in yur country or u can search the web and download them from the internet. You can also buy them online.
Good Luck!

Due to the clinical orientation of the USMLE questions a lot of IMG's usually take it after they finish the clinical sciences part of the medical school curriculum. That way one can handle the questions with ease.
Yes, the above mentioned materials r the high yield ones which r being used by the test-takers all over the world.
You can also add the following ones to supplement these:
WebPath for Histopathology slides
Lippincott for Biochemistry and Pharma
Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple
BRS for Pathology and Physio
High Yield for Neuroanatomy and Behavioural Sciences.
Wikitestprep -- a free online Q Bank for Step-1
There r many other online Q Banks and materials available as well but they r not so widely used.
Good Luck!
