When u do an elective in Surgery u practically show that u r interested in Surgery as a specialty. Also, an Attending Surgeon will only evaluate yur performance in Surgery and not in Medicine, etc.Due to these facts an LOR form a Surgery elective will, in all likelihood , be useful when u r applying to sugery programs.
If u r interested in IM then go for an elective in IM or related sub-specialties like Cardio, etc. But, still the best wud be to do it in IM.
Good Luck!

bingousmle - 06-21-10 10:06 yeah i second adonis... the LORs should provide an insight about your skills in the intended field.. if you still have time and resources there is no harm in getting some experience in the related field.
